South Asian Female Terrorists Reshma and Shabana MemonWanted by the CBI for Black FridayFebruary 21, 2009 MAHARASHTRA INDIA NEWS -- Fifteen years ago in Mumbai, India, two women, Shabana Memon and Reshma Memon, conspired with the notorious Dawood gang to unleash a rain of terror throughout the city formerly known as Bombay. Notably, the terrorist attack included the hurling hand grenades at a Hindu colony in Mahim, which triggered riots in the city. Meanwhile, the perpetrators had stuffed scooters with RDX that exploded at thirteen locations including the Bombay Stock Exchange building, Air-India building, and a prominent petrol pump in Dada. Luckily, several scooters failed to explode in Naigaon and on Dhanji Street. The explosions occurred between 1.30 p.m. and 3.40 p.m. killing 257 people and injuring 713, sending a tremor of fear throughout India that earned the attack the name "Black Friday." Reshma Memon - Fugitive The terrorist raid was the alleged handiwork of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his gang to avenge the demolition of the disputed Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh state on December 6, 1992. Dawood gang members engineering the attacks included Mohammed Dossa and members of the Memon family. Evidence revealed the Memon garage was used for retrofitting the scooters with the bombs. Moreover, the day before the attack, the Memon family including Tiger Memon's wife, Reshma Memon, and his sister-in-law, Shabana Memon, fled to Dubai, an indication that the women may have had prior knowledge of the conspiracy to commit the terrorist act. Tiger Memon and Yakub Memon also arranged for monetary payments to two other family members through a NRI account in Hong Kong Bank's Bandra branch, under the names of Ayub Memon, Rubina and Shabana Memon and Reshma Memon. Tiger Memon - Fugitive In 1994 the Memon family members, except Tiger and Ayub Memon, returned to Mumbai and were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In the charge-sheet filed in 1993, the CBI had named 199 persons as conspirators in the attack. The court found Tiger Memon and his three brothers, Yakub, Essa, Yusuf, and his sister-in-law Rubina, guilty of conspiracy. At the time of the trial, 94 accused conspirators where on bail and 29 where in jail. Eleven accused died during trial while one, Riyaz Khatri jumped bail and two others, a Samajwadi party leader Abu Azmi and Amjad Mehr Baksh were discharged by the Supreme Court. Eventually the 29 in jail accused were discharged by the apex court. The judge in the case did find Yakub guilty of conspiracy and financing the terrorist blasts through co-accused Mulchand Shah and the firm Tejarat International owned by Ayub Memon. Additionally, Yakub Memon was convicted for providing travel to other conspirators to Pakistan for training in arms and ammunition. Other convictions included possession weapons and distribution of those weapons with ammunition amongst gang members. Yakub Memon was also found guilty of purchasing the scooters retrofitted with explosives. Essa Memon was found guilty of conspiracy and allowing the use of his flat in Mahim for meetings to plan the attack as well as storage of weapons, ammunition and explosives. Yusuf and Rubina Memon were also convicted on similar charges. Shabana Memon - Fugitive Many of the accused Memon family and Black Friday conspirators absconded during the trial. In 2007, thirty fugitives were still wanted, most posted with Interpol, including the two females fugitives, Shabana Memon and Reshma Memon. Now in 2008, intelligence agencies have publically announced the joining of forces between the Dawood Ibrahim gang and the jehadist group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). This joining is a consequence of the Dawood gang embracing the Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadees sect. The Sect's fundamentalist outlook is backed by Wahabi Islamic scholars of Saudi Arabia. Additionally, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, the underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim is designated a global terrorist. Furthermore, the Dawood syndicate is responsible for large scale shipments of narcotics to U.K. and Western Europe. Finally, this most wanted terrorist-criminal is believed to be still living in Karachi, Pakistan, and is wanted by Interpol, but has been removed from the CBI's most wanted list. While on the other hand, Interpol does not publically list these two women, Shabana Memon and Reshma Memon, as wanted, but the two female fugitives are listed as most wanted by the CBI.
